The Shelter Care Experience
While I was in Shelter Care I was going to a Cognitive Intervention program in a court building across the street. I also continued to drink and smoke pot/and cigarettes while I was in Shelter Care. I was there for two weeks. One day when I was going to Cognitive Intervention I spotted a friend of mine in front of the building on the steps smoking a cigarette. I went up to him and said, "Hey, got another smoke I could bum from ya?" He looked up at me and smiled. He was drunk. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a cigarette and handed it to me. Then he said, "I have something else you might want." and he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a Diet Mountain Dew bottle (20 oz.) full of Vodka. He handed it to me and I put it in my coat pocket. Then I said, "Well I'll see ya later, man." and went inside to my C.I. Program. About twenty minutes into the program I went into the bathroom with a mountain dew I had gotten. I sat in the bathroom for about ten mintues taking shots of Vodka and chasing it with Mountain Dew. Then I just emptied the remaining Mountain Dew into the bottle with the Vodka and went back to the program. I drank the Vodka/Mountain Dew all through the program. Finally it ended and everyone went outside for their rides home. I was pretty drunk by then. I stood out on the side of the building with everyone else for a little while. After a while it was just me and my friend Chris outside. We sat on the steps outside of the building and smoked a coupel bowls of pot in a little homemade handheld waterbong. All of a sudden I had a serious nicotine fit, so I started running across the parking lot to see if there were some long cigarette butts in the outside ashtray. On the way across the parking lot I tripped on my own foot, did a sort of summersault/barrel roll across the ground, somehow landed on my feet, and continued running to the the ashtray. While I was tumbling across the asphalt some guy getting into a car called out "Wipe out!" I finally made it to the ashtray only to find that there wasn't anything worth smoking, so I just grabbed the two longest ones. Then I ran back to where Chris was standing. We smoked the two tiny butts, and I finished the bottle of Vodka/Mountain Dew. After I had finished I threw the bottle into the snow by the building next to the steps. It's probably still sitting there next to the steps. I finally headed back to the Shelter Care building. I was having a hard time walking straight. I got inside and went to the booth to get my pockets and shoes checked by a staff member. The staff person (his name was forrest) walked up to me, told me to come into the booth, and shut the door. Then he looked at me and said, "Where'd you get the alcohol?" I said in return "What alcohol?" He simply said, "Come on man! I can smell it from here!" Then I said, "I got it from a friend... " and explained everything. He called the police, and they took me to the hospital to get checked out. One of the officers was really gorgeous... she was a woman. She was really cool, too. I talked to her while I waited for the doctor. Finally the doctor came, I pissed in a cup, and then I was brought back to the shelter care building. I threw up a couple times that night, and in the morning. I was really hungover, so a staff person took me out on a walk to sober me up. It was extremely cold outside. We walked around a bit... and then I began leading him to the courthouse ashtray. When we got there I grabbed out a full cigarette that was just sitting in there and pulled out a book of matches I had hidden in my pocket that they didn't find. I put the cigarette in my lips and got the match ready. The staff was all like, "Donavan, put that down... you don't wanna do this." I said, "Fuck if I don't!" and lit the cigarette. He then said, "Okay, I'm not risking my job for this. Don't even bother coming back, cuz I'm calling you in for Secure (Jail)." He then walked away and just left me there. I then went and walked around downtown for like 5 hours. Finally, after I had found a full pack of cigarettes laying somewhere and got another book of matches, I decided it was just too cold to go one the run or anything. I then walked back to Shelter Care, turned myself in, and got sent to Secure for a few months. While I was in Jail that cottage incident finally caught up to me. I went to court and got sentenced to Lincoln Hills (Maximum Juvenile Prison) for a year and a half. I got out onto the Bracelet (electronic monitoring parol) in the beginning of May 2002. I finally got off the bracelet mid-September of 2002.
